Una Mattress FAQ

General

Do you add any fire retardant chemicals?

We are delighted to pass the relevant British fire-retardant standards for our entire range of organic certified mattresses without having to treat them with any kind of potentially harmful chemical FR treatment. We assure you organic certified, 100% chemical-free and non-toxic mattresses utilising our exclusive naturally fire retardant blend of GOTS organic certified cotton with GOTS organic certified lambswool and natural carbon in our organic latex. Another great benefit of the organic wool is that it is the most superior natural bedding material for managing temperature and wicking away excess moisture.

Are Una products climate friendly?

95% of all foam mattresses are made from fossil fuel synthetic foams and a carbon footprint to match. At Una we are passionate about a great night’s sleep that doesn’t cost the earth. Una products are carbon negative, climate friendly products. The trees from which sap is tapped to make our organic foam remove more carbon each year than what is needed to make and transport the mattress. In addition we donate regularly to rewilding and reforestation initiatives like treesisters.org

How come Una Mattresses are cheaper than other organic latex mattresses?

It was really important to us to be able to offer a more affordable option to organic mattresses. We worked hard on building direct relationships with the organic plantations in India who are experts in making organic latex and cotton for our mattresses. This made it possible for us to guarantee the best possible quality control and also save money by avoiding any middlemen. Another reason for us being able to offer our mattress at such a great price is our decision to sell exclusively online.

What is an organic mattress?

Unfortunately, it is very common in the mattress industry to use a large variety of toxic chemicals and glues in production. As we spend 1/3 of our life on a mattress this is devastating. Plus, it’s harmful the planet too. An organic mattress is made from 100% natural and organic independently certified materials, ensuring a healthy sleep all-round.

Better for you

Certified 100% organic materials mean you can relax without a care. The comfy latex is tapped from groves of Hevea trees, without adding smelly petrochemicals. And who needs fire-retardant chemicals when our soft organic wool and cotton cover does the job naturally and safely?
You and your family can lie back and breathe easy, right from the first night.

Better for the planet too

As well as being healthy for you, your Una mattress is kinder to the environment. Because we use 100% organic latex, cotton and wool, there’s no need for industrial chemicals, glues and pesticides – and the harmful footprints they leave behind. And every inch of your Una mattress is sustainably grown, fairly traded and fully certified.

How can an organic mattress help with allergies or Asthma?

Figures from the American Lung Association suggest that between 50 and 80% of all asthma and hayfever cases are triggered by an allergic reaction to dust mites. However, the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology [AAAAI] recently concluded that mattresses made from natural materials are far less likely to cause allergic reactions than those made from synthetic materials.

Organic Natural Latex Versus Synthetic Latex

Most latex mattresses on the market are made from synthetic latex foam which is made from petroleum which can have a strong chemical smell (off-gassing) and emit VOC’s (volatile organic compounds). They are often 100% synthetic or it is a blend of synthetic and natural latex and marketed as ‘natural’ or eco-friendly.

100% natural latex is made purely from sap from the Hevea (rubber) tree which is injected with air and baked into a natural and durable point-elastic pressure relieving foam.

GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certified natural latex foam is the gold standard of foams. With the latex sap sustainably tapped from Hevea trees that are organically grown without the use of any pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Dunlop or Talalay method for making natural latex foam?

The original pure method to make natural latex foam is the Dunlop™ method (used since 1929). Una only uses organic certified latex foam that has been made according to this method.

The Talalay method adds a step of flash freezing the mould of latex and adds some chemicals to stabilize the materials.

Some online articles suggest Talalay is softer than Dunlop latex but in fact, Dunlop natural latex foam can be made soft, medium or firm depending how much air is injected in the foam making process.

It is safe to use electric blankets with your products?

Yes, absolutely – there is no harm in combining the mattress with electric blankets.

Is Una Carbon neutral? what is the carbon footprint?

The organic certified Hevea trees from which we tap our sap for our foam absorb more co2 than what is emmited during production and transport. In addition we are in the process of becoming carbon neutral certified for our business operations as well as our products.

How do I customise the comfort of my Una?

Una is the world’s first organic mattress with comfort you can customize. This means you can tweak the firmness of the mattress to perfection even as preferences and needs change over time. Double sizes and larger have the possibility to adjust the firmness of their side of the bed to their liking – a soft pillow top layer ensures a seamless mattress with no gap in the middle.

To change the firmness level, unzip the cover and rearrange the layers to your liking!

For extra softness have the soft on top the medium in the middle and the firm at the bottom. If you need some initial softness combined with firmer support then go for soft on the top, firm in the middle and medium at the bottom. For a medium feel put medium on top soft in the middle and firm at the bottom. For a firm feel have the firm on top medium in the middle and soft at the bottom or medium on top and firm in the middle for a medium-firm feel. Side sleepers and light body types tend to need a softer feel. Front and back sleepers and heavier body types tend to need a firmer feel for a perfect spinal alignment. Your personal preference is also important of course ????

Do the layers move around once placed?

No. The combination of the weight, texture, design and tight cover ensures absolute stability in the mattress and compares to any regular one-piece mattress! There is no visible or feelable split in the middle and no wearing out of the cover either!

Can my partner and I choose different firmness levels?

Yes! All our double and larger mattress sizes have the possibility of adjusting the firmness on each side, ensuring the perfect comfort for everyone. These sizes come with a pillowtop layer on top to combine both sides seamlessly.

Is the cover washable?

Our mattress cover is made of 70% organic cotton and 30% organic fine merino wool. As with any mattress, please use regular bed sheets.

If necessary you can easily spot clean with mild soap and water. No washing machine or dry cleaning necessary! Some customers report back successfully washing the cover on a cold gentle wool/hand wash, however, we cannot take responsibility if for any reason the cover would shrink. If necessary, a new cover can be purchased – just get in touch with us!

What bases can an Una natural latex mattress lie on?

Slatted bases are ideal as they allow air to flow through the mattress giving it optimal ventilation. As with all foam mattresses, the space between slats should be no more than 2 inches (5cm) this is to ensure the foam does not start to droop between the slats which will affect the comfort and support of your mattress.

If you have a (box spring) bed base that is completely closed (mdf panels) then you can also put your mattress on that but beware it doesn’t allow for ventilation and may then also sleep hotter. You can always have some 5cm diameter hols drilled into the the solid base though which saves replacing the whole bed base.

If you wish to put your mattress directly on the floor then that is usually fine too. In fact one of our team members has had his Una on the floor for many years. Just put a protective layer between your floor and the mattress in case your flooring lets through damp and humid air which could cause mould issues over time.

About the Junior Una Mattress™

Which side up? Firmer or Softer?

As recommended by industry experts use the medium-firm side for youngsters aged 3-11 and the medium-soft side for ages 12-17.

Can the Junior mattress be used for adults?

There is no harm in the continuous use of the Junior mattress in young adulthood – this obviously also depends on the height and weight of the individual. However, the Junior Mattress is not a long-term solution for adults as it is not designed for the correct support of a full-grown person!

About the Baby Una Mattress™

When do I use the firmer side and when the softer?

Based on advice from industry experts and health professionals, the firmer side provides the right support for your baby from birth to 3 years, gently supporting their spine as they grow and develop.

From 3-5 years we suggest you flip the mattress over so your child can sleep on the softer, comfier side.
